On Sunday August 16 2020, Olten Cricket Club won the SwissT10 Cricket Championship by defeating Winterthur Cricket Club in a well fought final game of the tournament in St. Gallen, Switzerland. The goal of tournament was to promote the game cricket in Switzerland and give a chance to players to compete with well organized games. The tournament was attended by 8 teams, which included teams from all over Switzerland and also one from Germany.
This included teams from St. Gallen CC, Winterthur CC, Power Winterthur CC, Spice Village Zurich, Olten CC, Geneva CC, Freiburg Germany and Novartis CC. The players in teams were coming from as far as England and Spain and raised the standard of tournament. The audience and players were served home made Indian food and entertained by live Dj music. A dholwala was also in ground beating the “dhol” (Indian drum) which was fully enjoyed by players by performing typical Punjabi Bhangra dance.
In the final, after winning the toss and batting first, Olten CC posted a competitive total of 113/5 in 10 overs. The highlight of the first inning was batting of Robert Freemas who scored rapid 48 runs with help of three 4’s and five 6’s.
Chasing the target, Winterthur CC had a great start and were going along the required run rate of 11 runs/ over but Olten CC kept taking wickets at regular intervals. In the end, Winterthur CC was all out for 85 in 8 overs. The highlight of second innings bowling of Robert Freemas who took 4 wickets by giving just 14 runs in 2 overs. Robert was also the main of the match of finals for his excellent overall performance with bat and ball.
Before the final, St. Gallen Cricket Club beat Freiburg FCC in a nail biter 3 rd place game. Batting first St. Gallen CC scored 123 runs and in response Freiburg managed to score 121 runs in allocated 10 overs. At the last ball of the match, Freiburg needed 3 runs to win but Falak Sher managed to bowl an excellent delivery and clinched the 3 rd place title for St. Gallen Cricket Club.
The awards ceremony was attended by member of Swiss Parliament Mr. Nik Gugger as Chief Guest. The other members of award ceremony included Mr. Alex Mackay President of Cricket Switzerland and Mr. Anjum Jaura. The trophies were presented by the Chief Guest, Mr. Nik Gugger to winning team, runners up as well as the 3rd place. The awards were also given to the Man of the match of Finals Robert Freemas, and MVP of the tournament Rajan Sharma for his excellent performance of scoring 259 runs with thirtyone 6’s in just 3 games.
For the enjoyment of audience, a small competition of cricket was organized which was sponsored by Swisscom.
Couples were given the chance to hit stumps with ball and the winner received Apple Air pods as first prize.
Similarly, children also participated and won prizes.
